"The majority of souls are lost through discouragement." by the Venerable Francis Liberman:
"The practice of appreciation starts with the intention to improve our lives on every level—socially, vitally, functionally, and spiritually. When we engage in this practice on a consistent basis, it makes us feel better. The alternative stance—to blame others for our problems, to lower our immune system’s resistance to infectious diseases, to function but to do so ineffectively, to feel as if life is empty of meaning—is a formula for unhappiness.
This practice is likely to have its ups and downs but trying to be appreciative begins to chisel away the rough edges of discouragement, depression, depletion, and depreciation. Ingrained habits surrounding these ―D’s‖ of dissonance do not disappear overnight. It takes time to locate and reform these defective pockets in our character formation. The change required of us is not external or merely behavioral; it calls for an internal selfexamination of our penchant for depreciative living. Normal resistances like these ought not to deter our pledge to practice appreciation. It should be stronger than these occasional relapses. What we must not forget is that the conflict between appreciation or depreciation can only be quelled by the conviction that a new path has opened before us."
